Purpose and Objectives of the Needs Assessment
This report is an extension of the pilot needs assessment conducted in the spring of 2010 among chronic disease prevention practitioners and evaluators in Ontario. As before, the main purpose is to understand the perspectives of practitioners, evaluators and managers who work in chronic disease prevention programming, policy development and evaluation regarding:
- Gaps in information needed to inform intervention planning and implementation
- Current evaluation practices and supports
- Gaps in evaluation supports
- How to support the collection and sharing of lessons learned from practice
- Likelihood of accessing a range of potential CAPTURE evaluation supports
Findings will help to inform the design and marketing of the CAPTURE platform.

Participant Recruitment
Recruitment criteria included; front-line practitioners, health planners, evaluators and managers working in health promotion and/or chronic disease prevention who are involved in planning, implementing or evaluating programs and/or policy. The survey was disseminated in both English and French.
A link to the online survey was disseminated via provincial chronic disease prevention, public health and health promotion organizations in all provinces, except Ontario. Ontario was not targeted for the National Needs Assessment because Ontario practitioners were the focus of the pilot needs assessment and focus groups and the evaluation questions were similar for both surveys. Some Ontario practitioners did participate in the survey.
There was surprisingly high representation of respondents from Manitoba and New Brunswick and surprisingly low participation of respondents from Alberta and Nova Scotia. This may be explained by the method of provincial dissemination of the request. In provinces where the survey link was disseminated via targeted listservers (e.g. New Brunswick, Manitoba) there appeared to be a greater response. In provinces where the provincial organizations disseminated the survey link to their membership through their website, there tended to be a lower response.
The online survey was open from June 15th – August 15th 2010. As an added incentive, participants were invited to submit their email address for a chance to win one of ten $25 Indigo Bookstore gift certificates. Confidentiality was maintained by separating email addresses from survey responses prior to collating and analyzing the data.
Of the 175 respondents who entered the survey, 134 met the survey qualification criteria and 104 completed the survey.
