This past October, CAPTURE held a consultative workshop in Vancouver, British Columbia as a final step in its early planning and consultation phase. The workshop sought to obtain feedback on the design of the CAPTURE web-based platform and supportive system infrastructure and to develop relationships with key organizations and individuals who may use, build or support the development of the CAPTURE system.
Our initial consultations from January through September 2009 included: an expert panel meeting; an online idea-gathering process called concept mapping; key informant interviews with health system leaders and decision-makers, and practitioners and practice managers; a meeting with attendees at the National Collaborating Centres’ Summer Institute; and an environmental scan of similar initiatives.
What we did
The fall workshop included presentations about The CAPTURE Project overall, the potential features and functionality of the platform, the content development strategy, and communications.
Participants also engaged in facilitated break-out group discussions on:
- CAPTURE’s features and functionality
- What we can “build on” to CAPTURE and “build in” to CAPTURE
- Content development strategy
What we learned
Participants were quite enthusiastic about the project and its potential, offering support, positive feedback and words of caution.
Overall, participants were receptive to the following ideas or approaches:
- The concept of an online evaluation tool.
- The incorporation of settings and context into the platform.
- The unique importance of collecting tacit knowledge.
- The thought of balancing the high tech endeavour with high touch capacity building support elements.
- The use of a collaborative model to engage across the country with relevant organizations.
However, we clearly heard the following cautionary advice:
- The project needs greater clarity and deeper understanding of the platformís potential users.
- The scope of the project as an end-to-end solution may be too large.
- The team should be careful in selecting pilot projects in terms of their size, scope and overall fit with CAPTURE’s mandate.
What we will do
As a result of the feedback and advice obtained at the fall workshop, The CAPTURE Project team is in the process of developing a partnership template to help us identify appropriate and relevant opportunities for collaboration. We are in dialogue with a number of potential partners about how we can work together to build parts of the system and engage with potential users.
We are also in the process of identifying opportunities to engage the practitioner user group in a more concerted way to ensure we continue to keep practitioner needs and insights in mind as we develop the platform. We are planning to use a web-based survey to obtain feedback from the chronic disease prevention practitioner community on the features and functionality of the platform. We are also planning to conduct focus groups and host webinars in order to obtain practitioner feedback to help refine the platform’s features and functionality.
